Take a Break and Evaluate

In your life, how many times can the phrase, “take a break and evaluate” come in handy? I like that phrase so much that I think I might put it right next to the “Live, Love, Laugh” plaque hanging in my kitchen. While we are out there living, loving and laughing we are often swept up in the middle of things and then we throw in a couple more L’s by Letting Loose – what I now call the 5 L’s. Not that there is anything wrong with that! However, too many times of letting loose and other things start getting tighter, like your favorite skinny jeans. While having a good time and practicing living a life that you love, it is important to take a break to evaluate how you are feeling, then decide how to proceed. A good time to practice this is when you are out to eat with a group. In a group, the drinking and eating tend to go overboard because everyone is having a good time and employing the 5 L’s. Now think about how you feel the next day. Yuck, right? What happens for a lot of us is that we end up over-indulging and feeling terrible the next day. The next step is to beat yourself up for eating too much or drinking too much. You may even skip your workout because you feel awful. It is a cycle so many of us get caught up in – and we can stop it. Practice taking a break and evaluating how you feel the next time you are out with friends or even having a meal at home. Since the body has about a 20-minute time lapse and does not tell you that you are full before it is too late, you need to practice stopping before you are full. Think of it like shutting off the water to a long hose. When you shut off the water valve, you know there is water still in the hose that will come out. If you are filling up a bucket and you don’t want to spill any water you will have to shut the water off before the bucket is full in order to accommodate the water still in the hose. This same principle goes for your stomach, except you cannot see the bucket (your stomach) and you will have to rely to the clues your body is sending you. You can do this and in the short-term, like tomorrow morning, you will feel so much better. Celebrate your accomplishment with a great workout and notice how much ‘lighter’ you feel. The results over the long-term will be worth the time you take to stop and evaluate.
